state resembles a

land is split by numerous rivers and water channels all
emptying into the blue of Bay of Bengal. And throughout the
soiled ground is covered by dense forest and vast saline mud
flats. This is the area known as Sunderban. The biggest
estuarine forest in the world. There are no roads in the
watery wilderness. The waterways are the only path ways in to
the heart of the forest Sunderban is actually composed of 54

SUNDERBANS -

THE FOREST
Dense, sometimes impenetrable undergrowth of Goran
between six and twelve feet high cover almost the whole of
Sunderbans, The timber for this one of the toughest in Indian
forest, the rest of fauna consist of clumps of Hantal, Dhundal,
Passur Sundram, Kerpra & Kankra. The forest can be botanical
termed as salt water heritiera type.
What identifies sunderbans are vast Mangrove forest with their
bayonet like roots protruding out of location to let the trees
breathe.
THE LIFE WITH THE FOREST
The forest is a natural habitat of the world famous
Royal Bengal Tiger, jungle cat, fishing cat, Axis dear, wild
pig, other and the largest estuarine crocodiles in the world.
Among the birds there are Herous egrets, strokes, cormorants
and sea gulls, variety of ferns as you sail closer to the sea
Kingfishers dive-bomb and come up with wriggling silvery prey
seasonal birds like ehimbrel, black tailed God wit, Eastern
knot and curfew, sand pipers, golden plovers, lesser whistling
teats visit regularly.
ACCESS
Sundarban is accessible only by riverine water
ways. Embarkation points can be reached by Canning, Basantid,
Namkhana which are connected from Calcutta.
ACCOMMODATION
MADHUKAR, luxury launch of the Tourist
bureau which has facilities of an excellent gallery, sleeping
quarters complete with bed rolls and armed guards and
provision to anchor in mid channel and stay overnight.
